Church fire closes part of Briar Creek Road, sends firefighter to hospital; LIVE updates on WBTV

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Two firefighters were injured after battling a church fire in east Charlotte overnight. More than 75 firefighters responded to the fire at Briar Creek Road Baptist Church. One of the two firefighters who suffered heat-related injuries was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Main.

Part of Briar Creek Road is shut down due to the fire. Our Ashton Pellom is LIVE at the scene and will have updates throughout the morning. 

Also breaking overnight: One person was killed in a shooting in Davidson. Officers were called to the 400 block of Jetton Street, in between Central Park Circle and Park Drive, around 9 last night.

Police say a man was shot while driving, causing him to crash into a dumpster. Officials were responding to what they first thought was a car crash. Family friends say the man was in his 30s. His name has not been released. 

South Carolina lawmakers will honor the state senator and pastor who was killed along with eight other people at a historic church in Charleston. We have details on the public viewing for Senator Clementa Pinckney today.

And there's a move to make sure protestors stay far away from the funerals of all of the victims as their funerals take place over the coming days.
