The following is a response to a recent Speak Out editorial. The views expressed are solely those of the speaker.
As we anticipated, our recent editorial on the lowered gas tax – at the expense of higher fees – touched a nerve with our viewers.
Mr. James Jimison of Hickory stated that:
"It's very possible that we'll be paying $800 extra per vehicle….This is something the legislators don't want us to know…This is ridiculous and outrageous. I encourage everybody to vote against it."
Self-professed Baby Boomer "MJ" said that:
"…the annual N.C. fees and insurance for…owning a vehicle are exorbitant….I lived in both Illinois and New York state and thought I was living in the land of taxes until I moved to North Carolina."
"Increase ticketing fees to more than a slap on the wrist."
Patrick Morgan of Charlotte wrote:
"I am so embarrassed by the leadership in my beloved state.…
Our elected officials…stealthily double taxes veiled as fees associated with DMV processing….
The gas tax reduction is a ruse."
Carl Stowe appreciates the decrease in the gas tax, but understands that:
"the tax on gasoline is earmarked for repair and maintenance of North Carolina highways…Income lost from this tax reduction will have to be made up somewhere."
