Homicide investigation underway in NE Charlotte; Tractor-trailer crash closes part of I-85 in Kannapolis - LIVE updates on WBTV

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police are searching for a gunman after two people were shot and killed in east Charlotte late Tuesday night, according to officials.

Police say the shooting happened around 11:53 in the 4100 block of Atmore Street, near E. Sugar Creek Road. When police arrived at the scene, they found a man and woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The two were pronounced dead on scene.

Interstate 85 in Kannapolis is shut down following a crash involving two tractor-trailers, troopers say. The crash happened around 2:45 a.m. at mile marker 62, near Dale Earnhardt Boulevard.

Troopers say one of the drivers was taken to the hospital. Officials have not said when the expect the area of the interstate to reopen.

Police say they have a person of interest in the homicide, described as a black male around 6'0" tall and 185 pounds. He was last seen wearing a red shirt and white shorts. We will have LIVE updates on the case throughout the morning.

Breaking overnight: A man is under arrest after an attempted home invasion near uptown Charlotte. This happened on Kesswick Avenue and when police arrived, they say several shots were fired into the air as the burglar took off. He was arrested a short time later. His identity has not been released.
