What has happened to Rory McIlroy since winning the Wells Fargo Championship in record fashion? Well, on the course, it has not been too good.
Right after destroying the field at Quail Hollow with a 21 under par, Rory took a flight from Charlotte to England for the BMW European Championship. The very next week, he would go to his home country for the Irish Open. Rory would miss the cut at both events.
Those events would wrap up a string of 5 straight tournaments in 5 weeks.
It started with the Cadillac Match Play event in San Francisco. Rory won that one. Then it was a flight to Jacksonville for the Players Championship. Rory finished tied for 8th. A couple of hours after getting the trophy here in Charlotte, he was in the air over the Atlantic Ocean for the 2 events in Europe.
Let's be real, anyone would be TIRED after that. Rory may not say that out loud to reporters, but he is human. So the fact that he shot a 71 and a 78 at the BMW and a 80 and 71 at the Irish should be no surprise.
It is also NO reason to be alarmed as the US Open tees up next week in Chambers Bay in Washington.
The world's #1 golfer is a 4 to 1 favorite to win the tournament.
There is a golfer who missed the cut in his previous 2 tournaments and went on to win the US Open. Charlotte resident Webb Simpson did it in 2012 when he missed the cut at the Players Championship and the Memorial before winning the US Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. That same year before winning the Open, he had a good showing at the Wells Fargo Championship where he finished 4th.
I personally am not picking Rory to win the US Open. I will make my pick next week, but Rory will have a good showing after taking a few weeks off and I wouldn't be surprised if he was in the final group on Sunday.
