Beloved familiar face in Salisbury has passed away

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - Anyone who has attended any of the "Night Out" events in downtown Salisbury over the last few years has probably smiled at the appearance and antics of Jim Schafer, better known as "Wacky Doo" the clown.  With bright makeup and balloon tricks, Schafer entertained children and adults for years.

Schafer passed away last week of a suspected heart attack.  He was 68.

Jim is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lois Schaefer; children Kelly (John) Macadam and Jason (Kellie) Schaefer; brother Paul (Kathie) Schaefer; grandchildren Jack, Sarah and Ben.

Jim was born on January 3, 1947 in Buffalo, NY and graduated from Cleveland Hill HS in 1964. He worked as a funeral director and an a sales professional, but was best known as "Wacky Doo the Clown" to families in western New York and North Carolina for more than 30 years.

Funeral services will be held today in West Seneca, New York.

In lieu of flowers, Schafer's family is asking for donations for the Special Olympics, which was a favorite organization of Jim's.

"He was such a wonderful man and usually just come for free and work for tips," said Mollie Ruff, Promotions Director for Downtown Salisbury.
