Seventeen people, including a Gaston County high school teacher, were charged in a sting operation for soliciting a child for sexual activity in Lincoln County.

Officials say the offenders agreed to meet with undercover investigators who were posing as children. The investigation was conducted from February to May 2015.

One of the men arrested, Jason Webb of Belmont, is a teacher at South Point High School. School officials confirmed Webb has been teaching at the school since 2010. They say he is suspended with pay, pending the investigation.

According to the school's website, Webb teaches senior English.

Investigators received more than 1,000 responses from various social media outlets during the operation. Some offenders brought alcohol and controlled substances when they met with investigators.

Students at South Point said they were surprised by the news, which they say they heard through social media. They say Webb has not been seen in his classes over the last few days.

Student Grant Johnson found the details via Instagram. "At first I didn't believe it. A lot of people didn't," he said.

Junior Tracey Maness said, "I was shocked and appalled. I didn't think anything like this could happen."

Brandon Huskins is enrolled in one of Webb's classes. "His style in the classroom is, you do your work and turn it in on time - you'll pass the class. I believe everybody is shocked and been like that," he said.

Anyone with information about this operation or any other criminal investigation is asked to call the Lincolnton Police Department at 704-736-8900 or Crime Stoppers at 704-736-8909.
