CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Part of Interstate 85 in northeast Charlotte was closed Wednesday afternoon after a fatal crash.
The accident happened around 1 p.m. on I-85 southbound at Sugar Creek Road. Highway patrol said one person, later identified as 19-year-old Michael Thompson, was killed in the wreck. Two other people were taken to the hospital.
Troopers said it appeared Thompson was traveling in the left lane at a high rate of speed. They said he went to change lanes and lost his left rear tire. He then hit a semi truck and went into the barrier.
There is no word on the names or conditions of the other two injured.
Officials closed several southbound lanes as crews work to clear the scene.
Traffic was backed up for several miles for nearly an hour.
