BLOG: How YOU can become an Official Storm Spotter

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Did you know there is no other place on the Planet Earth that gets more diverse weather than North Carolina? Try to think about one type of weather our state *doesn't* get!  We see snow, blizzards, ice storms, rain, thunderstorms, lightning, microbursts, hail, tornadoes, floods, mudslides, and of course, hurricanes.  Perhaps dust storms are about the only thing that do not make our list.

Last year in 2014, North Carolina had 545 reports of wind damage, nearly double that of Oklahoma.  We had 148 reports of hail, nearly the same as Oklahoma. And get this, we had 35 reports of tornadoes in North Carolina, nearly

Oklahoma's total.

So do you ever get that urge to run outside and look for that approaching thunderstorm?  Maybe you grab a camera trying to get a shot of lightning.  Or maybe you are one of the throngs that email us with pictures and reports from your neighborhood.   Why not channel that passion and join the ranks of the official Charlotte Skywarn Spotters?  With some basic training, you can then report directly to the National Weather Service, and your reports will be disseminated to all the media outlets.  Here's your chance to pursue your passion, and help out your community at the same time.
