Elementary school students buy vest for Kannapolis police dog

Schoolchildren at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School made an impressive donation to the Kannapolis Police Department on Tuesday. The children donated $978.00 to purchase a bulletproof vest for Boone, one of the Kannapolis K-9 units.

“Once the children heard that Boone did not have a vest they brought their piggy banks, their allowance money and other donations to the school in order to pay for the vest,” said STEM Teacher Sandy Summerlin. Children in prekindergarten to fourth grade participated in collecting the funds.

They were on hand this morning to meet Boone and his partner, Officer Nicholas Corn. Kannapolis Police Chief Woody Chavis thanked the students for their gift to the department. “It was wonderful for us to see how caring these students are and we are excited to be able to now purchase the vest for Boone. We really appreciate every penny the students collected for this project,” he commented.

The City has three other K-9 units: Diesel and Officer William Frazier; Vader and Officer Christopher Hamilton and Loki and Officer Scott Crainshaw.
