Salisbury's new City Manager to be sworn in today

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - W. Lane Bailey will be sworn in today as the next City Manager for the City of Salisbury, and will be introduced to the community at a special reception.

Bailey is an established manager with 25 years of local government experience, having served 7 years as a County Manager and over 14 years as a municipal manager. He most recently served as City Manager for the City of Lenoir, a position he held since 2004.

Bailey becomes Salisbury's 12th City Manager.

Mayor Paul Woodson commented, "I was impressed with Lane's demeanor during his interview. He has a positive outlook and will bring great vision to our City. He has a remarkable history as an established Manager and is held in high regard in his community and throughout the state. I believe Salisbury is on the verge of exciting change and with Mr. Bailey's impeccable credentials and experience, he's just the person to lead us."

A member of the International City County Management Association, Bailey is also a member and past president of the North Carolina City County Management Association. A graduate of Appalachian State University, he holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and a Master's Degree in Public Administration. He was named the NC Society of Certified Managers Public Manager of the Year in 2009.

Working with Developmental Associates, Council received applications from 56 candidates, and after thorough review narrowed the applicants to 12. Council took time to comprehensively research the candidates to further narrow the field to 6, and then conducted in-depth interviews to identify its top choice.

Woodson noted Bailey's values and focus on customer service closely aligned with Salisbury's and his ability to build consensus and relationships clearly made him the best choice for the community.

Bailey is married to wife Ruth, a school counselor. They have two children, an 8th grade son Brennan and 6th grade daughter Katherine. Bailey said his family is excited about Salisbury and they look forward to relocating as quickly as possible.

The reception for Bailey begins at 3:00 pm, the council meeting begins at 4:00 pm.
