Man who police say attempted to kidnap woman during chase appears in court

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A 40-year-old man who led authorities on a dangerous pursuit Friday night through several counties will now head back to South Carolina on extradition charges.

Investigators say Jonathan McCorkle led officers on a chase late Friday night when they attempted to pull him over. WBTV has learned he was wanted in York County in connection the robbery of several video game stores.

During the chase, McCorkle attempted to kidnap his girlfriend from the Ricky J's Sports Bar & Grill near I-85 and Sam Wilson Road, investigators say. They say McCorkle tried to push her into the car, but she was able to get away.

Within minutes, police officers arrived at the bar and started chasing McCorkle again.

He reportedly got back onto the interstate and led authorities through Gaston and Mecklenburg counties. Officers use stop sticks to stop his vehicle.

Eventually, McCorkle blew out at least two tires and his SUV stopped in Charlotte's Dilworth area, along East Boulevard. He was arrested when the police helicopter spotted his white SUV.

He is charged with DWI, failure to heed blue lights and siren, felony flee to elude among other charges.

In addition to the chase, McCorkle was also wanted for outstanding warrants by police in Charlotte and Rock Hill.

Investigators with Monroe police say McCorkle robbed a Kay Jewelers store earlier in March and stole a 4-karat diamond ring.

McCorkle will be back in a North Carolina court soon. His bond hearing is set for April 9 and his probable cause hearing is set for April 17.
