Glazed Ham

Presented by Chef Cynthia Ferich

1/2 of a whole ham (approx. 8-10 pounds)

1 cup ginger ale

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons ground cloves, divided

10-20 whole cloves

Wash the ham, and score into diamonds, fat side up.  Place some whole cloves between diamonds, and sprinkle 1 tablespoon of ground cloves all over the ham.

Make a paste with the brown sugar, ginger ale and 1 tablespoon of ground cloves.

Place ham in a large baking pan and brown in the oven for 20-30 minutes at 400 degrees.  Remove from oven and baste again with syrup.  Wrap in foil and cook for 2 hours at 325 degrees, basting every 20 minutes with syrup.

After the ham is cooked, remove and cool slightly before slicing.  Reserve the juices and skim off the fat after the pan has cooled.

I told my mom that she made the “best ham.” It is delicious! My grandmother stood there and said, “Who do you think taught her?” Well, they both get the credit!  How do you argue about “the best” with four generations of women cooking under one roof?
