HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - Police are looking for a motorcyclist they say is responsible for a smash and grab robbery at a Hickory jewelry store on Saturday.
Around 10:45 a.m., the robber, wearing a motorcycle helmet and gloves, entered the Bisanar Company Jewelers with a bag, smashed the glass case and began stuffing handfuls of jewelry into the bag, officials say.
Police say just before the robber smashed the case holding wedding jewelry, he looked at one of the clerks and said "I'm sorry." That was all he said inside the store.
Authorities believe the robber had been in the store before because he went directly to the case holding diamond rings and only smashed the glass on that one. He was inside less than a minute.
As the man was loading the bag, the owner of store triggered the alarm. That's when the robber ran off, jumped on his black motorcycle, and drove off on the pedestrian walkway on Union Square, police say.
When he ran out of the store and jumped on his motorcycle, several people saw him leave. Betty Mahoney was working in a store just a few feet away and saw the motorcycle "moving fast down the pedestrian walkway."
Mahoney didn't know a robbery had taken place but ran outside because she thought what the driver was doing was dangerous.
Mahoney says she was too late to catch him. "All I saw then was his tail light."
The man had a distinctive blue cap on the back of his motorcycle muffler, officials say. His helmet is described as black with red, blue and silver flame-like streaks on it.
Authorities do believe the helmet is distinctive enough that someone will recognize it from the surveillance pictures.
They are also reviewing video from the dozens of cameras on Union Square where the smash and grab took place in hopes of getting a better identification of the motorcycle.
Officials say no one was injured during the robbery.
