A West Iredell High School student was charged with felony assault after officials say he punched the school's resource officer Thursday afternoon.

According to the officer, Sergeant Hicks, Tyke'ydris Norris and another male student, who is a juvenile, were pushing, harassing and bullying another student.

Officials say Hicks attempted to break up the incident and Norris began punching him in the face. Hicks used his stun gun on Norris and put him under arrest, according to police.

Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell says a review will be done to determine if Hicks was justified using his taser.

Campbell says so far the school resource officer did everything by the book.

"He did an excellent job," the sheriff said. "In fact he probably put himself in a little more danger."

The sheriff tells WBTV Hicks has been with the force for more than 12 years. He is proud of how Hicks took a punch and was still able to do his job. The SRO also took another student into custody who police say intentionally head-butted a school employee.

This violent encounter has West Iredell HS students concerned and wanting change.

"I believe the students," one student who doesn't want to be identified said. "Also that are acting up, they need to calm themselves down."

The student says sometimes she's uneasy when going to school.

"The people at my school," the student said. "They do make me feel nervous, no lie."

Extra security was present at West Iredell High School to deal with threats posted on social media against the school.

Also students had limited movement to help keep things calm. The sheriff believes things will get better if disruptive students are removed.

"If he can't conform with school policies," the Sheriff said. "And get along with other people, then he should not be in that school."

The principal tells WBTV the two students arrested will be disciplined. No word if they will return to the school.

Police took Norris to the Iredell County Magistrate's Office where he was charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer, misdemeanor simple assault and misdemeanor damage to property. He was released on a $2,500 unsecured bond.

The other student involved was taken to the Department of Juvenile Services and charged under juvenile law for assaulting school personnel.

West Iredell High is located in the 200 block of Warrior Drive in Statesville.
