Officials: Juveniles served court orders after child porn shared at middle school

CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Multiple juveniles were served juvenile petitions, or court orders, after pornographic video was shared at Burns Middle School, the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday.

Officials say the videos and images were not taken at the school.

Earlier this month, investigators said that several students at the middle school were reportedly extorted over child pornography.

Deputies say the investigation revolves around the making and dissemination of child pornography involving some students at the school.

"We have seized several cell phones and as a result of what was located on those cell phones the investigation has now been broadened in its scope," investigators said.

Students from Burns Middle School were interviewed, in addition to students from other schools.

Investigators say the investigation is "fluid and ongoing" and say at the conclusion of the investigation, the evidence would be turned over to the District Attorney's Office to determine appropriate charges.

"At this time it appears all individuals involved are juveniles and no names will be released," officials said.

Officials with the Cleveland County School District said when they found out about the matter, they immediately handed the information over the local authorities.

The said they "cannot provide disciplinary information about any students pertaining to matter surrounding our schools."

The officials added, "Although we respect the transparent nature of the situation, we ask that everyone consider the long-term impact such matters can have on those involved, especially minors."

The sheriff's office said this investigation has brought a serious problem with teenagers to their attention. "This problem is not confined to a certain race, ethnic, or socioeconomic group. It is affecting everyone," the sheriff's office stated.

Officials encourage all parents to be "nosey," especially when it comes to their child's cell phone. "Children do not understand the consequences of sexting both legal and personal and it is imperative that parents monitor these cell phones," officials said.

A child who possesses a nude image of anyone under the age of 18, possesses what is considered child pornography, even if it's of themselves, officials say.

By juvenile law, officials say they are prevented from discussing who and what charges were filed.
