CHARLOTTE, NC (David Perlmutt/The Charlotte Observer) - The city of Charlotte is installing hundreds of solar-powered, credit-card compatible parking meters uptown and in the Southend and Elizabeth neighborhoods that will make it easier for drivers to pay for parking.
City workers are installing about 600 "smart meters" that accept credit cards and coins including nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars – or a combination of both, said Danny Pleasant, director of the Charlotte Department of Transportation.
"A parking revolution is happening in Charlotte," Pleasant said. "Parking meters will be easier to use and more convenient and truly an asset for 21st century drivers."
The installation is expected to be complete this week, the city said.
