CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

After nine seasons, Carolina Panthers' running back DeAngelo Williams says he's being released by the Carolina Panthers.

Williams told WBTV exclusively that he was cut by the team last week during a meeting with Panthers head coach Ron Rivera and General Manager Dave Gettleman.

"We sat down and he told me 'The fact of the matter is we're going to have to release you'," Williams told Molly Grantham during a sit down conversation. "I said you know, 'Why?' and he said, 'because we don't run the ball enough. Just like you said back before the season started, we don't run the ball enough to keep you and both [Jonathan Stewart], so we're going to release you'."

Williams said the entire conversation lasted around ten minutes and was the last he's heard from the team.

"I don't feel bitter at all. [Stewart] had the hot hand at the end of the season. He's a great running back, obviously, uh, I don't feel bitter at all. It's a business," Williams said. "And that business comes back and reminds us year after year - whether it be Steve Smith, whether it be Jordan Gross, whether it be myself - it's going to happen to every guy in that locker room, so it doesn't bother me at all."

Team officials say Williams has not yet been officially released from the team.

We don't know when it will be official DeAngelo Williams will be released," officials told WBTV. "He has not been released yet."

Williams has been with the team since he was drafted by the Panthers as the 27th overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft.

During his nine-year career, Williams has been plagued with ankle injuries. He injured his right ankle during the 2006 season and sprained his ankle in the 2009 season and was inactive for three games. In 2010, he was placed on the team's injured reserve list for an injury to his right foot.

In 2014, Williams was hit by several injuries, including a thigh injury, an injured ankle and broke his hand during the Minnesota game.

Williams ranked as the Panthers' all-time leader with 1,432 rushing attempts, 6,846 rushing yards, 46 rushing touchdowns and 18 games with 100 or more rushing yards.
