Sheriff: man takes Camaro on test drive, copies key, then steals the car

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - A man with an apparent taste for a fast car is now in jail, charged with stealing a Chevrolet Camaro SS from Cloninger Ford.

According to the report at the Rowan Sheriff's Office, Cloninger Ford reported that a 2010 SS Camaro was stolen from the business during the night of January 15.

Salisbury Police responded to the call.

In February, the Rowan Sheriff's Office became involved in the investigation and began searching for the car in the Ridge Avenue near Fulton Street in Salisbury.

On Thursday, detectives with the RCSO located the Camaro parked at a home at 109 Ridge Avenue, according to the report.

The suspect, David Anthony Monroe, 24,of this address, was taken into custody by RCSO Detective Rodney Mahaley.

The vehicle was recovered during the arrest, and returned to Cloninger Ford.

Investigators say David Monroe had test driven the car on January 28, 2015, and was able to obtain a copy of the key that allowed him to return and steal the vehicle.

David Monroe had been charged on a citation and released in early February by Salisbury Police with possession of another car unrelated to this incident.

Monroe is now in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $15,000 secured bond.
