Red Cross opens shelter as refuge from extreme cold

As the wintry weather continues to linger, the American Red Cross is opening a shelter to make sure everyone has a chance to stay warm.

The Shelter opened tonight at 6:00 p.m., and is located at the American Red Cross Elizabeth Hanford Dole Chapter, 1930 Jake Alexander Blvd W., Salisbury. Weather conditions and the needs of the community will be assessed tomorrow morning to determine whether to extend the Shelter hours.

The shelter offers cots, blankets, meals, personal hygiene items, health services and the support of caring volunteers.

“We're opening the shelter to ensure anyone who needs a safe and warm place to stay has an opportunity to escape the frigid temperatures,” said Sheila Crunkleton, executive director of the American Red Cross Southern Piedmont Chapter. “As the conditions remain dangerous, remember to check on elderly family members, neighbors and those with illnesses who may be more susceptible to bitterly cold temperatures to make sure they have adequate heating and accommodations.”
