Swimming Talent still running deep in Charlotte

Swimming Talent still running deep in Charlotte

Charlotte, NC (WBTV)

For many years Charlotte has been producing several swimmers who are at the top of the sport. South Mecklenburg High School alumnus Ricky Berens is a name that stands out to many. The 2-time Olympic Gold medalist has a long list off accomplishments, and he's been a role-model to swimmers across the world.

Back home at South Meck, the Sabers boys swimming team is making him proud. The Sabers won the 4A State Championship, Saturday in Cary, NC. It's the programs first State Title since 1989. The team consists of no-seniors, so expect to see them in the running once again in 2016.

At nearby Charlotte Catholic High School, the legacy continues as the girls won the schools 14th-straight state title. Senior Nora McCullah says being part of this program has been a unique experience and every girl holds the memory close to their hearts. They hope to be role-models to the future Lady Cougar swimmers.

Other state champions from the weekend include the Marvin Ridge girls team, they would secure the 3A State Championship. Shelby High School snagged the 2A boys State Title, and the Charlotte Latin boys tied Cary Academy for the Independent Schools 3A State Title.
