CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - If you don't want to be hacked by cyber creeps you must keep tight security on your e-mail I-D and password.
We now know that those two items are exactly what hackers are after because then they can get into all of your personal information.
The problem is, so many of us don't pay enough attention, still, to e-mail security.
WBTV cyber expert Theresa Payton says there are seven steps to getting your account back or preventing cyber criminals from owning it in the first place.
Her advice follows:
7 STEPS TO GETTING YOUR ACCOUNT BACK OR PREVENTING CYBERCRIMINALS FROM OWNING YOUR ACCOUNT:
1. SERVICE PROVIDERS CAN HELP
If you are locked out of your account, you will need to try to get it back from the services provider
Go to the help area of your provider. We have some quick reference links for Gmail, Hotmail, AOL, and Yahoo! on WBTV DOT com
2. CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD
If they do grab your account but you can still log onto it, change your password.
See our password demo for how to choose a strong password or try out the tool, Haystack (https://www.grc.com/haystack.htm)
3. CHECK YOUR SETTINGS
Once you are back onto your account, check all your settings. The hackers may change settings such as "forward all emails to account ABC".
4. CHECK ANY AUTO LOGIN FROM EMAIL TO OTHER APPS
If you auto login for other apps, you may want to change those passwords and check those settings as well
5. TELL YOUR FRIENDS / FAMILY
Tell everyone your account was hacked and not to respond to emails from you, click on links, or open attachments
6. TWO FACTOR AUTHENTICATION
Before the worst happens, try turning on two-factor authentication.
7. RUN ANTI MALWARE / ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE
Make sure you don't have malware logging your keystrokes or the cybercriminals will be back! Microsoft has a free malware removal tool and Sophos has one that works on both Macs and Microsoft computers
