Fitness Coach, Nettie Reeves, stopped by WBTV News Saturday Morning to share the importance of “Stretching it out.”
She broke down the information below:
Daily use of muscles can cause them to get tight, especially if you carry a purse or backpack. The heavier the bag, the more your body can tighten up on one side. Stretching can alleviate muscle tightness and stress and bring your body back to feeling better balanced.
If you workout, stretching can do wonders for your body. After exercising, your muscles may feel tight. During weight training, your muscle length shortens; this can leave you feeling tight and sore. Directly after your workout, you should stretch the muscles that you trained to feel less tense and to prevent injury.
Should stretching be done before or after the workout?
BEFORE = dynamic stretching as part of the warmup
Examples are arm circles, torso twists and hip rotations
AFTER = static stretching is the time to relax, wind down and improve ?exibility.
Relax and hold stretch for at least 30 seconds
Focus on breathing during the stretch, using each exhalation to go a little further.
How should stretching be done for maximum bene?t?
Hold the stretch at the ?rst sensation of resistance, then breathe your way through it. Imagine and feel the muscle tissue becoming more supple.
