BURKE COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - An elderly man was found dead and buried in his yard late Thursday night in Burke County, according to the relatives who made the discovery. Officials say an intruder was involved.

Police say the body of 74-year-old John Bailey Clark Jr. was found near the corner of Jenkins Road and Rose Carswell Road in Morganton.

John Clark's sister-in-law, Glenda Clark, says she and another relative went to check on him when they saw blood trailing out of the house and into a freshly dug area.

"I personally think they need the death penalty..somebody do something so cruel..I don't know..I'm just in shock..I just can't," Glenda Clark said regarding the person responsible.

Family told police they saw Clark alive the day before, on Wednesday around 6 p.m.

Authorities say they aren't sure what the intruder was looking for. Relatives also seemed confused on what an intruder would have been after. They said John Clark had no money and wasn't on any type of medication that would interest anyone. The family described him as a recluse, a hermit who rarely went out, and someone who would never hurt anyone.

The Burke County Sheriff's Office said details surrounding Clark's death are being kept confidential until they investigate further. The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Burke County investigators at 828-438-5506.
