Murder mystery at a party

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - There's a murder mystery in Charlotte that party goers might be able to solve.

Upwards of 100 people attended a street party one weekend last summer on Major Street, near Freedom Drive and I-85 in West Charlotte.

Police were called after a noise complaint at 2:30 a.m. It appeared to the officer that the party was breaking up and people were heading to their cars.

Two hours later, police were called back for shots fired-- lots of shots. Nearby neighbors told us they had their families duck down low for protection from stray bullets.

But the only thing bullets hit was 27-year old Rashad Porter.

"It's like part of me died with my son," said Rashad's mother, Emma Riley.

Emma says Rashad wasn't one to fight.
"He wouldn't argue with people, he would walk off before he would have any kind of confrontation."

Yet, Emma says she's been told there was some kind of confrontation during the party.

"He was with five other friends, from what I heard, and when he came out, they just started shooting."

But Emma isn't so sure Rashad's friends are telling the whole truth.

"They're saying there was so much shooting, they ran for cover themselves, but I'm like, my son is lying in the road dying, you left him. Why didn't you go back and check on him? You were riding together."

CMPD Detective Roz Harrington is working to find who did it. I asked her what's it going to take to crack this case?

"People coming forward. What an average person may think is nothing, may be the breaking point in the case."

Emma and her family members are praying someone at the party will divulge what they may know.

"Please, if you were out there that night, please come forward, you can do it anonymously. Please, help me. Don't let them get away with this."
