Armed person on the run after CMPD officer fires gun

Officer involved shooting investigation

An officer shot at an armed person accused of riding around and shooting a gun out of a car early Sunday morning.

The incident happened just after 1 a.m. in the

2500 block of

Beatties Ford Road in Charlotte, witnesses say.

A 911 caller gave police a detailed description of a car that was driving around with someone shooting a gun out of the window in the 2100 block of Lasalle Street.

Officers pulled over a vehicle matching the description. Police say when they approached the vehicle, a passenger who was armed with a shotgun stepped out. The person ran off as CMPD Officer Joseph Meloni fired his gun at them, according to the police report. Officials say they don't know if the person was injured.

Officers took the driver of the vehicle to CMPD headquarters for questioning.

Police and K-9 searched the area for the armed person but weren't able to find them.

The Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating if Meloni followed CMPD, which is standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting.

Meloni is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Meloni has been with CMPD since 2009.
