MOORESVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

A former middle school coach has been arrested after an investigation began into inappropriate text messages with a student.

Clarence Earl "Chip" Pickard III, 28, turned himself in to law enforcement authorities at the Iredell County Jail in Statesville Tuesday evening after warrants were issued for his arrest on two counts of indecent liberties with a child.

Mooresville Police began an investigation after receiving a report of inappropriate text messaging between Pickard, a former teacher and coach at Mooresville Middle School, and a student.

"Throughout this investigation, we have found no evidence of physical contact between Pickard and any student," said Police Chief Carl Robbins. "The charges are all related to inappropriate text messaging between January 1 and September 8 of this year."

Pickard was a physical education teacher and the head coach for the 7th and 8th grade football team, as well as the 8th grade basketball team and track team.

School officials confirmed that Pickard resigned from his position three weeks ago. He taught at the school for five years.

He is a former assistant coach at Salisbury High School.

Pickard was released on $50,000 bond.

Mooresville Police are continuing to investigate this incident.
