17-year-old shot and killed in Rowan County

Richfield, NC (WBTV) - A Concord man shot and killed his 17 year old sister in law and then shot his estranged wife's aunt in Rowan County.

According to police records, his estranged wife, Julia Moody feared for her life.

WBTV has learned Julia had filed for a restraining order last month against Moody.
Julia had also filed for a domestic violence order.

The estranged husband and wife were scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Neighbors we spoke with are having a very difficult time coming to grips with what happened last night.

"I was in the house and heard the sirens and I kind of just knew something was going on," said neighbor Jimmy Furr.

He's even more surprised to learn the Rowan County College student was shot by her brother in law.

"It's like I couldn't believe it you know."

Authorities say 33 year old Moody came to Julia's home on the 4000 block of Richfield Road Saturday night. Police say Moody broke several windows to the house and started shooting.

Deputies found 17-year-old Jennifer Merriman and Bernice Merriman, 54, shot.

Jennifer died at the hospital. Bernice Merriman, their aunt, is undergoing treatment, but is expected to survive.

"The girl had a good future," added Furr. "I mean she was going to junior-college and I just feel bad for her and for the whole family."

Julia took refuge in a closet inside the home with her two infant sons.
She and the children were unharmed in the shooting.

Moody then fled the scene and traveled to Guilford County.

The Guilford County Sheriff's Office says Moody kidnapped a couple at gunpoint in High Point, approximately two hours after the double shooting in Richfield.

Officials say Moody eventually let the man out and took off with the female victim.

The male victim went to law enforcement with a good description of the suspect and the suspect's vehicle, prompting a statewide and regional APB on Moody's silver four-door 2006 Infiniti M35.

The Guilford County Sheriff's Office says the female victim managed to escape and flee to a nearby residence in Edgecombe County.

She reported to officers she'd been raped.

The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office set up a search, located Moody's vehicle, then found Moody face down dead in a swampy area in the woods.

The Rowan County Sheriff's Office says Moody was believed to be in possession of a large amount of cocaine. They say they believe his cause of death is drug-related.
