Police: Protect yourself at the gas pump

Gastonia Police recently discovered a credit card 'skimming' device at a local gas station and they want drivers to be aware of the sneaky thievery.

Sergeant Heath McMullan said 'skimmers' are small devices placed inside credit/debit card machines. After you swipe your card, the devices allow criminals to steal your card number and pin number.

"The best way to protect yourself is to pay with cash," McMullan said. "If you are going to use a card, select the credit payment option instead of debit. Credit will only ask for your zip code. Debit requires your PIN."

As part of their investigation, police asked WBTV to not disclose where they found the skimmer. Police said the device has been removed and all the other pumps at the station were inspected.

"This is the first time we have had a device like this discovered at a gas station in our jurisdiction," McMullan said.

Here are some other tips to protect you at the pump:

  • Use pumps that are located close to the station. Police say skimmers are often found at pumps far away from the station.
  • Inspect security tape on the pump. Make sure the seal is not broken.
  • If you get a notice from your bank that there was suspicious activity on your card, report it to police. Reporting the incident can help police catch the person(s) responsible.
