RALEIGH, N.C. -

The General Assembly passed a law this summer opponents of Common Core hope will derail its use in North Carolina's public schools. But the law doesn't mean the academic standards have been automatically eliminated.

The law keeps the math and language arts standards originating from Common Core and approved four years ago in place until new ones are approved by the State Board of Education.

Legislators created a special commission to make recommendations to the board about how to replace those standards and whether to keep any currently ones.

The commission was supposed to meet by now, but its 11 members have yet to be announced.

Common Core critic Lt. Gov. Dan Forest is urging parents and activists who don't like the standards to speak out at expected public meetings.
