Victim identified in Lake Murray drowning

LAKE MURRAY, SC (WIS) -

The Saluda County Coroner's Office has identified a Charlotte man as the victim in a late Thursday night drowning in Prosperity.

According to Coroner Keith Turner, 31-year-old Jose Milton Martinez drowned in Lake Murray.

Investigators with the state Department of Natural Resources say Martinez and two of his friends paddled out on the lake in a jon boat shortly before 10:30 p.m. That boat, according to Turner, did not have a plug in it and quickly began to take on water.

Turner says Martinez and the two other men were forced to go in the water to escape the boat. Martinez, according to Turner, could not swim.

The two other men made an effort to save Martinez, but Turner says the victim was pulling the pair down.

Those two men eventually made it out of the water without Martinez.

The Saluda County and Prosperity dive teams arrived at the scene shortly after 11 p.m. and began seeking Martinez.

After an almost two-hour search, divers located Martinez' body just before 1 a.m. in 12 feet of water.

Turner says no foul play is suspected in this case. No life jackets were on board the boat.
