Creedmoor family grateful after plane misses home

CREEDMOOR, N.C. -

A family that moved to Creedmoor three weeks ago awoke late Thursday to flashing police lights and saw a plane crashed in their yard, and not far from their sleeping children.

The Cessna 150 clipped some trees and then came down in the front yard of the home at 3002 Krogen Court in Granville County.

“We're safe,” homeowner Ashley Bartlett said. “It could have been horrific.”

Pilot James Leggett, 46, of Atlantic Beach, also survived without major injuries. He suffered minor injuries and was transported to Duke Hospital for treatment.

David and Ashley Bartlett were asleep in their home with their 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son when the plane crashed only yards from their two-story home.

“We didn't hear anything. It was total quiet,” Ashley Bartlett said. “The only thing I heard was some talking outside our bedroom window.

“I sat up in bed and saw flashing lights and I said to my husband, ‘I think there's something going on.'

“We both hurriedly came out and put some clothes on and said, ‘There's a plane in the yard.'”

Officials said that the plane actually landed on top of a propane tank after clipping the trees.

The damage could have been much worse. Ashley Bartlett said the plane came right toward their window and their son's window.

“It seemed funny at first, but now it's real,” she said.

Despite landing on the propane tank, no major damage was done.

"Considering where the plane is, I think he did an excellent job getting the plane in here without causing any structural damage," said Richard Green, a neighbor of the homeowners who is also a pilot.

Although the plane went down just after 11 p.m., the Brassfield Fire Department wasn't paged to the scene until 12:28 a.m. Friday.

Officials say that Leggett contacted Raleigh-Durham International at 11:05 p.m. to say he was having trouble with the plane. He then lost all contact with RDU, at which point Wake County authorities were called.

Leggett was coming from Kentucky.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
