New elementary school opens in Hickory

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) -

Some students in the Hickory City School system had a new school to start the new year in. The new Longview Elementary was finished this summer and opened for the kids on Monday.

The $12 million school is built for more than 400 students and with security in mind. No one can enter the school without a special card to scan.

During the day, parents will be able to get through one set of doors but cannot get into the school, or even the office, without someone buzzing them through.

There are also cameras throughout the campus watching all the entrances and the school grounds.

It was all done with safety in mind. "That is the number one priority," said Principal Judy Jolly.

Superintendent Walter Hart came to the school in style. He rode bus number 95 with a couple dozen students. "We had a great ride in," he said.

Hart thinks the new school is one that other systems might want to model any new construction after. "It's a great facility and secure for our students."

The new school replaces one that was built in the 1950's.

"These kids really needed it," said Hart.
