CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A Charlotte student is now listed in fair condition after being struck by a car on Monday.

The incident happened just before 12 p.m. on Beatties Ford Road at Hildebrand Street, near Northwest School of the Arts.

Police said that 16-year-old Jennifer Crystal Tejeda was attempting to cross Beatties Ford and ran across the roadway in front of other vehicles, causing them to stop to avoid hitting her.

One of those vehicles, a truck with a trailer traveling northbound in the left lane of Beatties Ford, slowed to avoid striking her. That truck, police said, obstructed the view of a woman driving a 2004 Dodge Stratus in the right northbound lane.

Police say Tejeda continued running across the street directly into the path of the Dodge. They say the driver of the Dodge hit the brakes, but could not avoid striking her.

Tejeda was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with critical injuries. On Tuesday, officials said her condition had been upgraded to fair.

School officials confirmed to WBTV that the Tejeda is a student at West Charlotte High School.

Police have not said if any charges are being filed.
