CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A freshman soccer player at Belmont Abbey College has died nearly a week after collapsing during practice.
School officials told local media that 18-year-old Michael McGuire of Bartlett, Tennessee, died Friday.
Belmont Abbey marketing director Rolando Rivas said McGuire had been practicing about 20 minutes on Aug. 16 when he collapsed and was taken to a hospital in Gastonia.
Rivas said the practice was being supervised by an athletic trainer.
Rivas said doctors don't know what caused McGuire's death.
The school held a vigil Friday night. A public mass was planned Monday afternoon on the campus in Belmont.
Soccer players had arrived on campus in early August to begin practicing for the coming season.
