Man shot in his home taken to hospital

A 69-year-old York County man is in critical condition after investigators say he was shot during a home invasion.

According to the York County Sheriff's Department, deputies were called to the man's home on Gentry Lane in Rock Hill around 6:30 Saturday morning.

Family members identified the man as Wayne Whiteside.

Whiteside's sister, Elaine Hollis is still in shock that someone would attack an innocent man in his own home.

"Whoever did this, we want them caught and we want them to answer for this, because he never asked for someone to come and do this," Hollis said.

Hollis told WBTV her brother was living alone after his wife passed away two years ago. She says Whiteside is a war veteran and proud Marine.

"Everything he wore. He wore Marine hats, Marine shirts, if you seen him, he had something Marines on," Hollis said.

She said being in the Marines is in her brother's blood, that's why she believes he fought back when someone broke in. The family believes the intruders may have been someone who had worked on the house before.

Hollis doesn't know what was stolen from her brother's home except for one thing, a necklace Whiteside always wore with the corps emblem on it, and his wife's wedding band.

"I don't know why somebody would do that. It just breaks my heart. We don't know if he's going to pull through this," Hollis said.

Whiteside was air lifted to Carolina's Medical Center in Charlotte.

If anyone has any information about this crime, they are asked to call Crime Stoppers of York County at 1-877-409-4321.
