Daycare evacuated in north Charlotte after gas leak concerns

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A north Charlotte daycare had to be evacuated Wednesday morning after concerns over a gas leak in the area.

Charlotte firefighters were called the 3500-block of David Cox Road just before 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. This is the address for Afterschool Construction Zone.

Daycare staff called 911 after smelling smoke. Officials say crews did not get any dangerous readings on their gas meters.

The daycare was evacuated as a precautionary measure. Officials kept children outside, until the fire department cleared the building.

The odor was traced back to the adjacent restaurant, the Fiesta Maya, officials said.

Officials say the restaurant had an issue with some overcooked food in the kitchen.

Daycare officials say they sent an email out to parents to let them know of the incident.
