Officer Jason Crisp and K9 Maros memorialized in Burke Co

BURKE COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

The memorials are important, but they never get easier. Not for Officer Jason's Crisp's wife. Or his boys. Or his colleagues.

Or for any of the dozens of people who came to remember the U.S. Forest Service Officer and his K9 partner Friday morning, when Burke County officials added both their names to a monument dedicated to fallen heroes.

"Each and every one of the memorials that we come to, all of them are very special to us," said Crisp's widow, Amanda, at the event.

Earlier this month, President Obama signed a bill naming a U.S. Forest Service Station in North Carolina for Crisp.

But it's hard to do enough to honor the brave duo, who lost their lives in March while protecting others.

Crisp and Maros were searching for a gunman who allegedly killed his parents before ambushing them.

McDowell County Sheriff Dudley Greene worked with Crisp and Maros often. "I think it is important that we remember the service and the sacrifice of these officers," he said. "But this also gives an opportunity to look back and reflect and remember their lives and how they led them and the service above self that they exemplified."

Amanda just hopes it helps us all remember this: "The person that Jason was..." she said, fighting back tears. "He was a very good person, and I hope everyone remembers the morals that he stood for. He loved his work and he loved his family."

And now Crisp's family and friends continue to get together to show how much they loved him.
