Deputies in Cleveland County are investigating after they say a man shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself.
The incident happened on Friday at a home on the 1600 block of Midway Avenue in Shelby. Deputies were called to the scene in reference to a shooting.
"It's just heartbreaking," neighbor Mary Lou Smith said, "They were so much in love."
When deputies arrived at the home, they found a woman deceased from an apparent gunshot wound, as well as a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The male was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center where he later died.
Family and friends identify the couple as Linda and Glenn Haynes. They have been married for about 16 years.
Investigators say that it appears the man took his wife's life, called 911, and then took his own life.
They say that family and friends indicated that the wife had been suffering from a serious illness for a long period of time. We are told the granddaughter spoke to her grandmother Friday. Haynes said she was in a lot of pain.
"I guess he watched her suffer," neighbor Becky Southards said, "As long as he could stand it."
Family tells WBTV there were letters the couple left instructing the family what to do after the couple was gone. It is not clear when those letters were written.
"They wanted to go together," Smith said.
Officials say there was no history of domestic violence between the couple.
