NC audit: Medicaid provider process could improve

North Carolina's state auditor says the agency running Medicaid and its contractor could do a better job ensuring only qualified providers are approved to offer patient services.

Beth Wood's performance audit Thursday reviewed provider applications to treat Medicaid consumers and scrutinized some to see if providers were truly suitable.

The audit says Division of Medical Assistance procedures failed to provide enough assurance that providers are qualified and the agency lacked documents to evaluate high-risk applications.

Some applicants could have criminal or licensing board sanctions.

The Department of Health and Human Services oversees the division. Department Secretary Dr. Aldona Wos says several audit issues are being addressed and there's new protocol and monitoring of eligibility standards.

Auditors say the first edition of those procedures were deficient and have been revised.
