Pit bull shot, killed by Gaston Co. detective in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Detectives in Charlotte are investigating after a police detective from another county shot and killed a dog in Mecklenburg County on Wednesday.

"I don't understand why. I don't understand how the police get away with what they are doing," said owner Holly Baucom.

The incident happened Wednesday morning just after 11 a.m. at a home on the 11900 block of Rocky River Church Road. Two Gaston County Police detectives arrived at the home to ask questions about an arson investigation back in Gaston County.

Officials say the detectives were asked by a woman in the woman to come to the back door, but didn't mention there was an unsecured dog in the back yard.

That's when a pit bull named Katrina charged the detectives "in a manner deemed by the detectives to be aggressive," a police report states.

Officials say the detective attempted to back away from the dog, but couldn't. That's when one of the detectives fired.  The dog was only feet away at the time.

Police say the Gaston County detectives went to the home to speak with Jennifer McCullough, Baucom's daughter about the arson investigation.

"I did nothing wrong for the cops to be here for me," McCullough told WBTV.

No Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer was at the scene at the time of the incident, but detectives from CMPD arrived to process the scene.

The Gaston County Police Department is handling the internal investigation to ensure that all of their policies and procedures were followed. CMPD detectives are investigating the shooting.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.

WBTV reached out to the Gaston County Police Department on Wednesday. An official said no one would be available to talk on camera but detectives are coopering with the investigation.
