COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -
Emergency crews said they had to deal with a snake as they attempted to rescue an 18-year-old Maryland girl in a water filled ditch following a car accident in Colleton County.

Officials with the Colleton County Fire and Rescue Department say at 4:26 a.m. on Monday authorities received 911 calls of a high speed rollover on I-95 near mile marker 60.

Callers had reported that a girl had been ejected, and they were unable to locate her.

When crews arrived they found the vehicle, a Chevrolet Avalanche, heavily damaged in the woods. CCFR crew members also spotted people in a nearby ditch holding a teenager's head above the water.

Paramedics reported that the teen was conscious and was stuck in about two feet of water.

A report states that crews had a "few tense moments" as they had to fend off a 4-foot snake from the water as they worked to remove the teen from the ditch.

The teen was stabilized at a local hospital and later transferred to the Trauma Center at MUSC. CCFR officials say four other family members were in the vehicle and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

According to emergency officials, the vehicle had rolled over multiple times before coming to a rest in the water filled ditch.
