Police: Newborn baby taken to hospital, story of being found a 'hoax'

KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) -

Police say the story of a newborn baby being found at a Kannapolis McDonald's just hours after being born was a hoax.

The baby, which was originally reported as being found at the McDonald's restaurant on S Cannon Boulevard, was taken to the hospital before 3 p.m.

Officials say the child was not found at the McDonald's, and that the 21-year-old mother, whose name has not been released, admitted to having the child Friday morning at her home in Concord.

They say she took the baby to the hospital and claimed she found it in the dumpster at the restaurant.

Police told WBTV that investigators followed up on leads and interviewed possible witnesses. They also said that they reviewed security footage.

Police said the baby was cold when it arrived at Carolinas Medical Center Northeast and had to be warmed up by staff. The child is expected to be okay.

No charges had been filed as of 4 p.m.
