CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -

The former Indian Trail councilman who wrote his resignation letter in Klingon is a write-in candidate for U.S. Senate.

The Charlotte Observer reports that David Waddell is a certified write-in candidate against Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan.

Waddell says his January resignation letter from town council boosted his name recognition but may have hurt his candidacy.

Waddell said then he used Klingon, the language of a warrior race on the "Star Trek" TV shows and movies, as an inside joke.

He says he's a Libertarian running on the Constitution Party's platform.

The North Carolina Board of Elections says Waddell had enough valid signatures to be a write-in candidate. His name won't be on the ballot but votes for him will be counted.

Hagan's Republican opponent is House Speaker Thom Tillis.
