Airstrikes authorized

Hi everyone, this is Paul Cameron at my desk in the WBTV Newsroom.

Tonight, the President is authorizing targeted air strikes against extremists in Iraq to protect American personnel. The U.S. has already airdropped meals and water in Iraq, sending aid to minority groups trapped as brutal Islamist fighters advance.

A boating accident on Lake Norman killed a man last month. But CMPD Lake Patrol did not respond. Tonight, reporter Coleen Harry is talking to Cornelius town leaders who say the lack of response has become too common for years. They are calling on CMPD to guarantee a response to all calls in the future.

It's not a good night to be on a honeymoon in Hawaii. A hurricane is predicted to make landfall there tonight. And an earthquake struck the big island earlier today.

In Charlotte, we're getting ready for the first Panthers preseason game tomorrow and it could be soggy. Eric Thomas says the weekend will be wet and he'll have details in his First Alert Forecast.

And is Molly Grantham having a boy or girl? We'll use cupcakes to find out tonight so please join Eric Thomas, Delano Little, Molly Grantham and me for WBTV News at 11:00 in just a few minutes!
