Report: Toddler found inside apartment alone, mom arrested

YORK, SC (WBTV) -

A York County woman is facing charges after police found her young daughter inside an apartment alone early Wednesday morning.

According to a police report, officers were called to an apartment along the 900-block of East Liberty Street around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

They were told that a child was inside the apartment alone, according to the report, so they called the woman who lived in the apartment and asked her to come home.

When 22-year-old Brittany Nicole Howell returned to the apartment, officers went inside and found the toddler crying in a play pen.

Howell told officers that she'd been at Walmart shopping for groceries for the little girl and that a neighbor was watching her.

The neighbor told police she wasn't caring for the little girl and had no idea why she was home alone.

That's when police say Howell changed her story that she was at Bi-Lo with her sister. Her sister told officers that she didn't know the child was home alone.

Howell says the toddler, who is around a year and a half old, was sleeping when she left and she didn't want to disturb the baby.

Officers say it wasn't clear how long the child had been alone.

Howell was arrested and charged with cruelty to children.
