HEALTH ALERT: VDACS warns of Souperb soup health risk

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is warning consumers to not eat any soup made by Souperb, located at 314 North 25th Street in Richmond.

VDACS says the soup was improperly processed and may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, which can lead to serious illness or death. Souperb will issue a voluntary recall, but VDACS says the risk is high enough to issue a consumer warning.

Throw away the product immediately - double bag the jars in plastic bags and place in a trash receptacle for non-recyclable trash. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water after handling the product.

"There have been no cases of any health problems reported," said Souperb Soup owner Diane Fraser. 

The Agriculture Department says cases of botulism could develop if jars of Souperb soup sit on the shelf for too long.

"So we are discontinuing that method. We are proactively voluntarily recalling all jars of Soupurb products that are out on the marketplace," said Fraser. "The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is doing their job which is to look out for the public health and we appreciate that, and we will cooperate in anyway possible."

VDACS recommends that consumers experiencing any ill effects after consuming these products should consult their health care provider immediately.
