Two men charged after officer dragged while investigating assault

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Two men are facing charges after they are accused of grabbing a Charlotte police officer and dragging him while trying to escape Tuesday afternoon.

Officers say Chad Clay and Maurice Clay grabbed Officer Richard B. Starnes, a motorcycle officer with CMPD, and dragged him with their black Nissan along West Sugar Creek and Reagan Drive.

The incident happened around 12:43 pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say Officer Starnes had stopped to assist another officer in an investigation when an assault victim pointed to the vehicle of the men who reportedly assaulted her.

Officer Starnes tried to speak to the men, later identified as Chad Clay and Maurice Clay, when one of the men grabbed Officer Starnes and drove off, dragging him down the road.

Officer Starnes was able to free himself and the vehicle took off.  The other officer on scene stopped to help Officer Starnes.

Officer Starnes sustained an injury to his leg from the accident and was transported by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment.

The vehicle as later located and five people inside the vehicle were detained by police and questioned.

Chad Alexander Clay and Maurice Julian Clay were arrested in the case.

Police say Chad Clay was driving the vehicle and charged him with attempted murder, hit and run and driving with a revoked license. Maurice Clay was charged with attempted murder.

Another passenger, Antoine Johnson, was arrested for assault in an unrelated case.
