A woman is dead after hitting a tree as she was jumping into the water at a Fairfield County rock quarry Wednesday evening.

Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey identified the woman as 26-year-old Brooke Lynn Huffstetler of Great Falls.

Huffstetler and a group of friends were swimming at a quarry located off of Highway 901 when she jumped off a cliff and hit a tree on the way down, according to the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office. They say she never surfaced after hitting the water.

A sheriff's office incident report indicates Huffstetler had hit a tree on a prior jump but appeared to be fine.

Crews responded to the quarry around 7:00 p.m. and found Huffstetler's body an hour and a half later.

The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office, EMS, DNR and a search team from the Fairfield County Fire Department assisted in the response.

According to the report, the property owner did not know that Huffstetler and her friends were on the property.

Ramsey says an autopsy was being conducted Thursday morning to determine Huffstetler's cause of death.

The sheriff's office has classified the incident as an accidental drowning.
