New 485 flyover ramp opened for the AM commute

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Relief is finally here for thousands of drivers in south Charlotte commuting to and from work.

Thursday morning the Department of Transportation officially opened a ramp from Johnston Road to I-485, just in time for the morning rush hour.

The flyover ramp opened around 5:15 a.m. Thursday morning. Officials arrived around 2 a.m. to complete the final cleanup to make sure the road was ready for drivers.

The new addition should save drivers from having to wait at a traffic light to make a left turn onto the 485 inner loop. The light would often result in two to three miles of backed-up traffic in the Ballantyne area.

The project is part of the widening project on 485 between I-77 and Rea Road.

The new lanes there will open later this year.
