NCDOT officials to give update on new I-77 toll lanes

Officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation will give an update on the construction of toll lanes along I-77 on Monday.

The update will be presented by officials with NCDOT at the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce just before noon.

The I-77 managed lanes project is trying to reduce congestion and traffic along the interstate.

To do that, officials will add two carpool lanes that will be available to drivers if they pay a toll. The remaining lanes will still be free.

Currently, I-77 has one High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane, commonly known as a carpool lane, in each direction within parts of the project's boundaries.

The project will convert those HOV lanes to managed lanes, according to the NCDOT website.

NCDOT says the Charlotte region has grown by 135 percent in the last 25 years. Traffic on I-77 has increase 20 percent in the last 5 years.

These officials are ready to talk new developments and updates on the managed lanes project.
